12 Essential Safety Rules

A simple guide to enjoying fireworks safely and responsibly.

01

Buy From Trusted Retailers

Only buy fireworks from licensed or registered sellers. Check for the appropriate CE or UKCA marking and make sure the product is suitable for your space.

02

Read Every Instruction

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Read them in advance and use a torch if needed. Never use a naked flame to read labels.

03

Keep Fireworks Secure

Store fireworks in a closed box, away from heat and flames. Remove only one at a time and close the box afterwards.

04

Keep Your Distance

Keep spectators at or beyond the minimum safety distance printed on each firework. Ensure the firing area is clear of obstructions.

05

Light One at a Time

Only a responsible adult should light fireworks. Use the recommended lighting device at arm's length, then move away immediately.

06

Never Return to a Lit Firework

Never approach or attempt to relight a firework after ignition, even if it appears not to have worked. It may still explode.

07

Never Throw Fireworks

Never put fireworks in your pockets, throw them or aim them towards people, animals or buildings.

08

Supervise Children

Keep children away from the firing area and supervise them throughout the display. Children must not handle or light adult fireworks.

09

Take Care With Sparklers

Never give sparklers to children under five. Wear gloves, light them one at a time and place used sparklers in water.

10

Protect Pets & Neighbours

Tell neighbours about your planned display. Keep pets indoors and be considerate of nearby animals and wildlife.

11

Keep Water Nearby

Have a bucket of water or hosepipe ready. Keep cigarettes, bonfires and other naked flames away from stored fireworks.

12

Stay Sober & Responsible

Do not drink alcohol while setting off fireworks. Plan your display in advance and follow local rules and permitted firing times.

Important: Never Relight a Firework

If a firework fails to ignite or does not operate as expected, do not approach it or attempt to light it again. Keep everyone away and follow the manufacturer's instructions for dealing with misfires and safe disposal.

Know the UK Firework Curfew

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, fireworks generally cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am, with exceptions for certain celebrations.
